Company Profile

InduTec, your Tech Transfer Center in Brussels
InduTec is a non-profit Technological Transfer Centre created in 1994 in order to stimulate innovation and technology transfers between the four industrial engineering institutions (ECAM, ISIB, Institut Meurice, and EhB-IWT) of the Brussels-Capital Region and the enterprises located in the Region. The organization builds synergies based on numerous competencies and expertise active in the institutes in order to respond to enterprises’ technical requirements.

R&D FACILITATION

Since several years InduTec answers to increasingly R&D industry’s requests (mainly in the Brussels region) for contracted or cooperative researches. For entrepreneurs or established companies developing a technical or commercial prototype, InduTec is the ideal choice thanks to reduced costs from a financial point of view, and thanks to highly skilled professors and researchers in faculties from a technical point of view.

A large number of companies make use of InduTec’s service, and consider it as their real external R&D department. There are no fixed costs, only R&D investments keeping up with overall project costs, there are reduced competition risks thanks to the special status of InduTec, and there is the opportunity of an international application of the R&D results, whether involving a purely subcontracting approach or a cooperative one.

MEDICINE, HUMAN HEALTH, AND ELECTROMEDICAL EQUIPMENT

For more than 80 years the three research units located in the Institut Supérieur d’Ergotherapie et de Kinésithérapie Department (ISEK) have been active in ergotherapy and physiotherapy. Through national and international collaboration, experimental and applied research is undertaken in order to develop new methodologies and techniques to significantly improve diagnostic aids and patient management.

In addition, the other institutes have worked on the development of devices used in medical fields (basically diagnosis-support tools for both the professional and private communities) and on the development of IT platforms that provide better management of medical imaging.

The units are specialized in :

Mechanical behavior studies of different human body parts. Studies include anatomical description, clinical implications, mechanical, and dynamic modeling
Modeling of the biomechanical behavior of arterial and venous flows
Numerical modeling of anatomical structures in order to understand the functioning of a lesion
Software and hardware developments allowing analysis of human dimensions
Study of the lymphatic system, its pathology and its role in the immune system (using NMR Imaging -MRI-, analysis of in vivo human imaging, analysis of haemodynamic, and cardiopulmonary parameters)
Understanding of the human body under normal and extreme occupational activities and in stressful situations, in order to improve human capabilities in such situations

Development or improvement of medical imaging systems

FLOMEDI 29.08.2008

FLOMEDI is a Brussels spin-off* of two departments (Institut Superieur Industriel de Bruxelles – ISIB and Institut d’Enseignement Superieur d’Ergotherapie et de Kinesitherapie – ISEK) of the University College Paul-Henri Spaak.

FLOMEDI designs, develops and produces software and electronic medical devices in order to facilitate, simplify, and increase accuracy of diagnoses. Currently FLOMEDI focuses its research on non-invasive diagnostic tools for cardiovascular risks assessment. The company provides also consulting services mainly to SME’s willing to develop new and innovative technologies in the medical domain.

Impaired endothelial function is an early event in atherogenesis and cardiovascular diseases and can be evaluated by the Flow-Mediated Dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery. FMD is impaired in patients with cardiovascular disease risks such as smoking, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, atherogenesis, diabetes, etc.

The software FMD-I has been developed in order to accurately valuate the Flow-Mediated Dilation (FMD) and the Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) using advanced algorithm detection for artery’s walls. Both measurements are non-invasive and provide assessments of the cardiovascular risk.

FMD-I characteristics

Real-time and differed ultrasound videos acquisition up-to 30 fr/s
Selectable measurement area region of interest of videos and images
Several built-in filters
Adjustable brightness, contrast, gamma correction, and gain
Real-time and differed measurement of the brachial artery diameter
Real-time and differed IMT measurement
FMD valuation
Patient file management including FMD history
Operates with ultrasound devices equipped with composite video-signal output
Users log
Comprehensive, configurable reporting in Microsoft® Excel®
FMD-I advantages

Automatic detection of the artery’s walls by an advanced algorithm
Automatic detection of the artery maximum dilated diameter
Easy navigation and logical usability during the patient examination

Allergens and bacteria detection services 01.09.2008

The detection of allergenic ingredients in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products has received increased attention from the industry and legislative and regulatory agencies over recent years. This has resulted in the improvement of measures aimed at the protection of allergic consumers. The controlled production of products and control activities rely on the availability of methods capable of detecting traces of allergenic ingredients.

A food sensitivity is an adverse reaction to a food that other people can safely eat, and includes food allergies, food intolerances, and chemical sensitivities.

Food allergies are sensitivities caused by a reaction of the body’s immune system to specific proteins in a food. Current estimates are that food allergies affect as many as 6-8% of young children and 3% to 4% of adults.

A food intolerance is a food sensitivity that does not involve the individual’s immune system. Unlike food allergies, or chemical sensitivities, where a small amount of food can cause a reaction, it generally takes a more normal sized portion to produce symptoms of food intolerance. While the symptoms of food intolerance vary and can be mistaken for those of a food allergy, food intolerances are more likely to originate in the gastrointestinal system and are usually caused by an inability to digest or absorb certain foods, or components of those foods.

Currently producers perform in-house testing and/or use contractor labs, but most companies are not testing finished product. While a small number of companies are testing finished products (generally when the product is under full control), most of them only validate sanitation methods and environmental swabbing.

Since several years, the Food Technology Unit (University College Lucia de Brouckère – Institut Meurice) has developed a comprehensive and sensitive set of allergens and bacteria detection methods using Real-Time – Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA) tests.

The Unit currently offers a comprehensive set of allergens detection including : soya, gluten, peanut, nut and hazel nut, almond, egg, milk, mustard, shellfish, fish, celery, sesame, mollusc, lupine, etc.

In addition the Unit offers a fast RT-PCR method for bacteria detection and analysis.

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

The Unit has scientifically validated the limit of detection of existing PCR and ELISA kits considering the temperature and the matrix. Increased sensitivity and specificity of the kits reduce the number of false negative and false positive measurements offering a better diagnostic value
The Unit may perform detection of residual allergens in the production-line after industrial cleaning.
Companies and organizations without own lab equipment or having not enough equipment and/or expertise in the field of allergens detection could effectively (sub)contract their products’ tests in accordance with standards and country regulations in the following domains :

food/beverage industry :
- food processing : preparation of fresh products for market, manufacture of prepared food products
- wholesale and distribution : warehousing, transportation, logistics,
- retail : supermarket chains and independent food stores, direct-to-consumer, restaurant, food services
